Frequently Asked Questions
About Pivot and Our Transitional Living Program
What is Pivot transitional living for young adults?
Pivot is a structured transitional living program in Tucson, Arizona for young men who are transitioning from treatment into independent living. We focus on supporting young men in recovery as they build lives full of purpose, connection, and self-sufficiency.
Who is a good fit for Pivot’s transitional living program?
Pivot is ideal for young men who:
- Have completed a primary treatment program for substance use or co-occurring mental health disorders
- Are committed to maintaining sobriety
- Are ready to engage in education, employment, or vocational pursuits
- Need additional support as they transition into adulthood
- Benefit from structured living, accountability, and community connection
What makes Pivot different from sober living programs?
Pivot offers more than just recovery-supportive housing. We provide phased, age-specific programs with clinical support, life skills training, academic and vocational assistance, and a strong peer community. Our residents move through structured phases that gradually build independence, all while staying connected to recovery, therapy, and mentorship.
Unlike many programs, we also offer:
- Full-time licensed therapists on staff
- Access to accredited high school completion (through San Pedro Valley Academy’s Tucson campus)
- A focus on young men pursuing college or career development
- Three distinct, age-specific campuses: Adolescent Transitional Living Campus, Transitional Living Campus and Collegiate Recovery Campus
What kind of clinical support is provided?
Pivot provides:
- Individual therapy sessions
- Group therapy sessions
- Family therapy and communication coaching
- Access to psychiatric care and referrals when needed
- Coordination with outpatient or IOP programs for additional support
Our clinical team addresses both substance use recovery and co-occurring mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and trauma.
Is Pivot a 12-Step-based program?
Yes. Pivot emphasizes 12-step immersion from day one. Residents are required to attend meetings, obtain a sponsor, engage in step work, and take service commitments. We believe that consistent community involvement is essential for sustainable recovery.
How long do residents stay at Pivot?
While each individual’s journey is unique, most residents stay between 6 and 8 months. Progression through the program’s four phases is based on behavior, accountability, and engagement, rather than a set timeline.
Can residents attend college or work while in the program?
Absolutely. We encourage and support residents in:
- Enrolling in college classes at University of Arizona or Pima Community College
- Completing high school credits
- Working part-time or volunteering
- Pursuing internships or vocational training opportunities
Our goal is to help young men build the confidence and skills needed for real-world success while maintaining recovery.
What activities and recreation opportunities are available?
Recovery at Pivot includes fun, too. Residents participate in:
- Outdoor adventures like hiking, camping, and snowboarding
- Service projects and volunteer work
- Group outings to sporting events, concerts, and cultural festivals
- Weekly house activities and recreation nights
- Pivot Club System (a client favorite)
- Got a hobby or passion? If it's doable in Tucson, then we'll make it a weekly outing. Previous clubs include golfing, indoor rock climbing, jiu-jitsu, art & music, music recording, boxing, and more.
Tucson’s vibrant outdoor culture, music scene, and affordable cost of living mean there’s always something happening—and all activities are designed to show that sober living can be full of joy and connection.
Where is Pivot located?
Pivot operates three campuses in central Tucson, Arizona:
- The Adolescent Transitional Living Campus: 3 acres of comfortable, home-like living for teens transitioning from primary treatment.
- The Transitional Living Campus: A private, secure courtyard community for those beginning or building academic or vocational progress.
- The Collegiate Recovery Campus: A historic estate for full-time students, providing a structured "fraternity-style" sober living environment.
All three campuses are close to the University of Arizona, hiking trails, downtown Tucson, and dozens of 12-Step meeting locations.
