Academics at Pivot

# School Is Part of Recovery at Pivot

For a lot of young men leaving treatment, school is where things fell apart. Grades slipped, credits went unfinished, and a semester turned into a withdrawal. Going back can feel like walking into the same situation that went wrong the first time.

At Pivot, school happens inside the structure of recovery. Residents can finish a high school diploma on campus, ease back in with one or two classes, or attend the University of Arizona or Pima Community College full time. Every path comes with tutoring, advising, and study hours, and every student is surrounded by peers who are working on the same things.

## How Does School Fit Into Recovery?

School is treated as one of the main ways residents build independence. A young man who can manage a class schedule, meet deadlines, and ask for help when he’s stuck is practicing the same skills recovery requires.

Academics run on the same backbone as the rest of the program: daily structure, licensed clinical support, 12-step involvement, and peer accountability. School is scheduled around therapy and recovery commitments, not the other way around.

## Which Academic Path is Right For My Son?

Pivot offers three academic paths. Where a resident starts depends on where he is in school and how much he can take on right now.

| | Recovery High School | Part-time classes | Collegiate Recovery |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Who it’s for | Young men ages 17.5 to 19 who need to finish a diploma | Residents easing back into school or work | Full-time college students |
| What school looks like | Small on-campus classes, Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. | One or two classes, often paired with a part-time job | Full course load at the University of Arizona or Pima Community College |
| Built-in support | One-on-one help, self-paced curriculum, live instruction | Tutoring, study hours, and time management support | Weekly academic advising, tutoring, study hours, and executive functioning workshops |

### [Recovery High School](https://www.pivotrecoveryliving.com/young-adult-recovery-high-school?hsLang=en)

Pivot’s Recovery High School is a small, quiet classroom on campus, open only to residents. Students work at their own pace through a mix of independent study and real-time instruction, with one-on-one support from the teacher. There are no crowds, few distractions, and no falling behind unnoticed.

Most students finish their diploma in under six months. Classes end at 2:30 p.m., which leaves afternoons for therapy, job training, and group outings.

### [Collegiate Recovery](https://www.pivotrecoveryliving.com/sober-college-recovery-housing?hsLang=en)

Pivot’s college housing sits just over a mile from the University of Arizona and less than two miles from Pima Community College. Students take a full course load while living in Pivot’s structured community.

Each student meets weekly with an academic advisor who reviews grades and syllabi. Pivot helps with enrollment and course planning, runs study hours and executive functioning workshops, and provides tutors in science, math, English, and history.

Pivot also partners with Wildcats Anonymous, the University of Arizona’s student-led recovery group. Its on-campus meetings regularly draw more than 60 students, and it organizes recovery-friendly tailgates, campus events, and nightlife so residents can take part in college life without putting their recovery at risk.

## What If My Son Isn’t Ready for a Full Course Load?

He can start smaller. Residents in Pivot’s transitional track often take one or two classes, sometimes alongside a part-time job, and add more as they show they can handle it. Pima Community College is a common starting point for students who want more flexibility before moving to a four-year school.

This mirrors how the rest of Pivot works. Independence grows in phases, and residents earn more responsibility as they progress.
